<p>So it was finally Red John's great passion - to be adulated, appreciated and maybe even to have someone he felt eligible for such a role as a friend - that destroyed him. </p><p>Remember Lorelei's inadvertent disclosure of Jane having shaken hands with Red John had shaken Him badly, so badly he abandoned his usual suavity for phrases like "I'll show you clever" in the tape at the end of Season 5 AND he made the mistake of hiring some PI to bug the CBI office and even didn't quite manage to kill her. </p><p>But he had a chance to kill Jane for good on the church rooftop and blame it on the bad light and so on but he just couldn't resist trying to fit Jane into his big plans and so he saved him, even patting him in the small of his back as Jane scrambled to safety. </p><p>Even in the church, the final showdown, he just couldn't resist showing off, almost trying desperately to make Jane ask him how he knew about Jane's final 7 suspects. </p><p>
</p><p>In the end it was his passion which got him. </p><p>
