Andy Burnside is the Kent County Sheriff. He was in charge of the crime scene in Red Letter until the CBI showed up and debriefs them after their arrival. Burnside's team collects key evidence, including a fire extinguisher (the murder weapon) and a victim's cell phone with a message from someone named Carmen. They also question four women named Carmen as potential suspects, who all have alibis.

Sheriff Burnside also consulted the psychic Kristina Frye before the CBI team arrived, but he doesn't disclose the fee when questioned by Patrick Jane.

When first meeting Jane, Burnside calls him "the psychic" which Jane denies, as he usually does. However, when talking with Kristina Burnside brings it up again and asks: "I though you weren't psychic?" This is in response to what Jane said about him:

[...] he's also a man who likes to watch television with a cat curled up asleep on his lap while his mother sits next to him in nits, but I'm sure he'd prefer that to remain a secret. – Jane
