Summary (SPOILERS!)[]
A new lead in a high profile cold case requires Lisbon (Robin Tunney) to delay her plans to leave for Washington, D.C., giving Jane (Simon Baker) time to finally come to terms with his feelings for her and decide on a course of action. He eventually shows up to Lisbon's flight to DC and tells her that he loves her. She replies by saying that he said it "too late." However, later, she arrives in the TSA holding room where Jane is being held and asks him if he really means it. To prove it to Lisbon, Jane kisses her.
Recap[]
The sixth season finale of The Mentalist opens with Patrick Jane and Cho working on a case when Cho reveals that Teresa Lisbon is moving to Washington, D.C., with her fiancé Marcus Pike in 10 days. Lisbon told almost everyone about it except Jane, which Jane is not happy about. Jane solves the case in 5 minutes and the two return to the office.
Two days before Lisbon's departure, a note is sent to the FBI about a past case. The case focuses on a murderer the FBI failed to apprehend who is threatening to commit murder again. Abbott gets the whole office to work on the case and says everyone (including Lisbon, who is supposed to be leaving for D.C.) has to work on the case until it's solved.
Lisbon and Jane are sent to Miami to track down suspects. They speak to the husband of the first victim, the daughter and the husband's third wife. Jane sees that the family is extremely dysfunctional and believes they are just wacky, not cold-blooded killers.
Jane and Lisbon then meet Wesley Baxter, the biggest suspect in the original case. Baxter was accused of stalking the family years before because he had an intense crush on the daughter. However, Jane also believes him to be innocent. Lisbon goes back to the note that was sent to the FBI and cracks a code that was left at the bottom of the page. She and Jane then go to the Blue Bird Lodge, where it seems like the killer could be planning the next murder. Abbott and Cho also come along for backup.
Then Lisbon finds out that Jane booked rooms for the two of them at the hotel a week before the letter arrived at the FBI, meaning Jane wrote the letter and deliberately reopened the cold case to prevent Lisbon from going to DC. Lisbon is furious and throws a glass of water in Jane's face. She runs to her room to pack for the airport, where Lisbon and Jane exchange words through a door. Meanwhile Abbott is trying to explain to Cho why Lisbon is so mad (Cho has always thought they acted like brother and sister) Before running off to the airport Lisbon calls Pike to accept his marriage proposal, although her face in the taxi shows regret after she accepts.
Jane has set a trap for the killer. He knows that the killer will enter his hotel room and try to kill him. After Lisbon leaves, Jane is in his hotel room drowning his sorrow in the mini-bar when the husband's lawyer arrives. Jane quickly deduces that he is there to kill the murderer, because he was the victims secret lover and wanted to avenge her death. Next to arrive is Wesley Baxter, the original prime suspect who wants to kill the murderer for ruining his life. The lawyer talks about losing the woman he loved, because he was to scared to admit his feelings. This causes Jane to decide to leave and go to the airport to see Lisbon. As Jane leaves, the real killers, Greta's business partner and her yoga instructor arrive. Jane secretly sends an S-O-S to Abbott. There's a shoot out, and they eventually catch the killers, with Jane revealing that the motive was the partner's embezzlement. He takes Abbott's FBI vehicle to get to the airport faster.
Jane races to catch Lisbon at the airport. When he is denied entry by TSA he hops over a fence on the tarmac injuring his ankle. He hurriedly hobbles up to the plane and knocks on the door window begging to be let on the plane.
When he finally reaches Lisbon the conversation goes as follows:
Jane: There you are.
Lisbon: What are you doing here?
Jane: There is something I need to say.
Lisbon: (still angry) No, I don’t want to see you, go away.
Jane: You’re right, I have forgotten how to act like a normal human being, and I play games, and I lie. And I trick people to avoid the truth of how I feel. And the Idea of letting anyone close to me is terrifying for obvious reasons. But the truth Teresa is I can’t imagine waking up knowing that I won’t see you (tearing up) The truth is... I love you. Woo, you can’t imagine how good that feels to say out loud. But it scares me and it is the truth; it is the truth what I feel.
Lisbon: (tears running down her face) It’s too late. Jane, it’s too late.
Jane: Maybe (shrugs) maybe and I understand, it's ok, I needed to get to this, and you deserve to hear it. (An Air Marshall proceeds to arrest Jane and escort him off the plane, but he keeps professing his love) I love you Teresa and it makes me happy to be able to say that to you. I love her. I love her . You take care of her!
Later, Lisbon joins Jane in a TSA holding room and she asks if he meant what he said on the plane. When he assures her he meant every word she states "Good, because I feel the same way". Then Lisbon asks him to say it again. Jane slowly leans across the table and kisses her. It ends with them smiling at each other as the TSA agent tells them to quit it.
