Erica had him secretly conduct an interview with Sarah Harrigan for the matchmaking service. This allowed Sarah to unwittingly create an alibi for Erica while she went out to kill her husband.
Peter believed that Erica loved him, but she was manipulating him. He confessed only when she revealed that she never loved him.
